a beautiful PARADE!

What an evening! A BIG thank you to Gregory Hoskins (singer-songwriter) who delivered an amazing concert to a full house at French Café on English Road, Saturday, July 16th.  What made this concert even more special was Gregory Hoskins met - for the first time in person - painter Suzanne Caron who for the last 3 years has been working on an artistic series entitled "The gh Paintings", works based on Hoskins’ song lyrics from his songs: The Beggar Heart, The King of Good Intentions, and some of the Bloems (blog poems).  Suzanne Caron’s paintings adorned the high, white walls of French Café during the show.

Gregory Hoskins shared a wide arrangement of his original pieces and filled the warm summer air with his soothing voice…  Nearing the end of the second set, Suzanne Caron joined Hoskins for one of his last songs to paint “LIVE”. As Hoskins strummed the final chords to the song “Beautiful Parade” the artist turned the canvas to reveal to the audience the essence of the “Beautiful Parade” on canvas – truly magical!

A unique and memorable performance, filled with song and art, was enjoyed by all.  Thank you!

Quelle soirée un GRAND merci à Gregory Hoskins (auteur-compositeur et interprète) lequel livra un concert incroyable devant une salle comble au French Café On English Road, samedi, le 16 juillet dernier. Le fait que ce concert fut encore plus spécial est que Gregory Hoskins a rencontré pour la première fois  l’artiste peintre Suzanne Caron, qui durant les trois dernières années a travaillé sur une série artistique intitulée « les tableaux gh », des oeuvres d’arts basés sur les paroles des chansons de Hoskins tels que : The Beggar Heart, The King of Good Intentions et certains des Bloems (poèmes blog). Les tableaux de Suzanne Caron ornait le haut des murs blancs du French Café durant le spectacle.

Gregory Hoskins partagea un arrangement de ses pièces originales et emplissait l'air chaud d'été avec sa voix apaisante ... Vers la fin du deuxième set, Suzanne Caron s'est joint Hoskins pour l’une de ses dernières chansons à peindre "LIVE". Lorsque Hoskins gratta les derniers accords de la chanson "Beautiful Parade" Suzanne tourna la toile pour révéler au public l'essence de cette belle chanson - vraiment magique !

Une performance unique et mémorable, remplie en chansons et en arts, laquelle fut très appréciée de tous. Merci!

Gregory Hoskins (English)
A largely unsung figure of the Canadian folk-rock scene of the '90s when accompanied by his band,The Stickpeople, this marks his first official solo album. As part of his continuing adjustment to life as an indie artist, Hoskins here strips his sound to the bare bones, mainly his acoustic guitar and a sparse rhythm section. The simplicity definitely suits the songs, which Hoskins admits in his liner notes encapsulate a recent reassessment of his style.

At times, they reflect the solemnity of Daniel Lanois (without the studio effects) and the bounciness of Paul Simon (without the 20-piece backing band). Such comparisons are largely based on Hoskins' brand of quiet soul, which is truly at the heart of this album. His voice is haunting throughout and his lyrics speak of the hard lessons he has obviously learned over the last decade. The King of Good intentions is, quite possibly, the best Canadian album you've never heard. Released in 1993, this collection of 11 songs is stunning in quality, emotion, and solid musicianship, all written by Gregory Hoskins.

Figure  méconnue de la scène canadienne du folk-rock des années 90, il performe alors avec son band The Stickpoeple. Parallèlement il offrira son premier album solo « Moon come up ». Il s’ajustera à sa vie d’artiste indépendant en privilégiant et préservant les racines du folk/rock grâce à sa guitare acoustique et une section rythmique clairsemée. La simplicité colle à ses pièces musicales. Fidèle à sa personnalité et curieux, il avouera d’ailleurs être constamment en mode recherche et réévaluation sur le plan de son style musicale et de sa sonorité.

Vous constaterez que par moment sa musique exhale la solennité à sa plus simple expression d’un Daniel Lanois ou la douceur éthérée d’un Paul Simon. Ces attributs musicales, qui nuancent et relèvent ses pièces, tirent leurs origines de l’âme tranquille et sereine de l’auteur. The King of Good intentions est probablement, le meilleur album Canadien, que vous n’ayez entendu. Paru en 1993, cette collection de 11 chansons, toutes écrites par Hoskins, est magnifique dans sa qualité, ses émotions, soutenue par une musicalité fluide, cohérente, mais surtout rigoureuse !

My first experience with French Café was a great pleasure!  On July 16th I discovered that Gregory Hoskins is not only talented but funny too.... and he speaks French well enough to get a laugh out of everyone!  After two and a half years of working on The gh Paintings (work inspired by the music of Gregory Hoskins), we finally met at his concert.  Mario kindly invited me to exhibit the paintings I have created so far, a first public showing of the work, and Gregory suggested I paint during a song.  I did both.  It was a night I'll never forget.... had a GREAT time there!  Thank you Mario and Joanne.  We'll be back!

Une soirée inoubliable au FRENCH CAFÉ !

Que c'était bon de découvrir un site si chaleureux et convivial. C'était ma première à cet endroit et aussi la première fois que j'assistait à un concert où on a exposé des toiles qui avaient comme sujet cette musique et on a eu droit a une prestation de la peintre SUZANNE CARON en action sur de la musique de GREGORY. Qu'elle bonne idée ! Vraiment une expérience extraordinaire !
